JE Dunn has been working on the Swedish Medical Center campus since 2015, partnering with the hospital to expand and adjust to the ever-growing needs of the Englewood community. In the past decade, we have completed multiple renovations, additions, and complex mechanical upgrades to the 24/7 hospital campus. Completed projects include a 77,000 square foot, 2-story vertical expansion, a 600-ton chiller replacement, over 250,000 square feet of interior renovations and MEP upgrades, a 287,100 square foot parking garage, and most recently a 174,673 square foot, 6-story patient tower expansion to the main hospital. All projects were completed within occupied buildings or on the occupied campus without excessive disruptions to the ongoing operations.
This new patient tower was particularly complex as it started as a horizontal expansion and quickly became a vertical expansion as well. The original project scope included a 4-story patient tower expansion, designed for 5 additional floors in the future. The project utilized a collaborative preconstruction approach to meet a goal of having the design complete April of 2020, however with the impacts of COVID-19 it was later decided to put a hold on the design. Once the team was notified by the City of Englewood that they would be adopting the new building code in the spring, the design was expedited to be submitted prior to the code change to avoid having to redesign the project. HCA challenged the entire project team to build two additional floors on top of the building that was in progress at the time, without delaying the original turnover dates.
Together the team designed and built a 6-story patient tower that includes 90 med-surg patient rooms, a sterile processing department, mechanical room, and shelled spaces for a future cath lab and surgery suite.
