The Anschutz Health Sciences Building (AHSB) houses over 30 different user groups. As a result, JE Dunn delivered elements of both a higher education institution and a sophisticated healthcare facility.
Described as a one-of-a-kind statement building for the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, AHSB was built to adhere to a centralized collaborative community and deliver the concept of “science on display” with the use of glass partition walls and a 7-story atrium. The building was uniquely designed from floor to floor, addressing the needs of various user groups.
This 394,419-square-foot, seven-story clinical, research, and educational laboratory building is dedicated to personalized and precision medicine, biostatistics, informatics, and mental and behavioral health. Encompassed in the building is a data center, research lab space, atrium, multiple floors of offices, a conference center, and a wet lab.
Optimizing building performance and energy efficiency was essential for AHSB, where laboratory spaces demand 100% outside air and specialized ventilation systems. To meet these challenges, the project team implemented a state-of-the-art Konvekta heat recovery system—an energy-efficient solution that continuously monitors performance and maximizes operational sequences for around-the-clock energy recovery. Konvekta’s engineered hydronic coil design delivers exceptional heat transfer, whether capturing waste energy or distributing it across the system. As a result, the building achieved an impressive 60% energy use reduction compared to similar campus facilities and became the first LEED Gold Certified building on the Anschutz Medical Campus.
Aptitude played a pivotal role in the successful delivery of the Anschutz Health Sciences Building, a highly complex, multi-functional facility serving as a hub for education, research, patient care, and data storage. Beyond designing and installing five major technology systems—including the atrium’s massive video wall, a distributed antenna system, structured cabling, access control, and nurse call systems—Aptitude served as the technology coordinator, providing leadership across the entire technology package. Their value extended well beyond installation, acting as the main liaison among owners, IT, facilities, trade partners, and the construction team to ensure seamless integration and flawless performance on day one. With strong project management, design oversight, and technical expertise, Aptitude ensured every system connected to the campus network and supported the building’s diverse needs—from classrooms to a flagship data center—making the high-tech vision a reality.
