The new Chatham County Courthouse includes 155,000 square feet of new construction and 2,500 square feet of renovation. The facility is a four-story concrete and steel structure with architectural precast façade, and includes a basement and two new tunnels that connect the existing courthouse and the new courthouse.
The new courthouse is designed to accommodate an inmate transfer station comprising of seven holding cells in the basement, offices, jury assembly for 187, and security at the lobby on the first floor. The second floor features a multipurpose room for 85, four state courtrooms, two 3-cell holding areas, four judge’s chambers, and administrative offices. The third floor holds offices for staff attorneys and court support, four superior courtrooms with deliberation rooms, another two 3-cell holding areas, and four additional judge’s chambers. Finally, the fourth floor houses the administrative offices of the superior court, four courtrooms each with a jury deliberation room, two 3-cell holding areas shared by the courtrooms, and four judge’s chambers and administrative offices.
