Like many of JE Dunn’s healthcare clients, health systems across the country are investing in design and construction plans with an eye toward multiple strategic priorities, such as the patient experience, sustainability, and flexibility. JE Dunn’s Russell Templin, Senior Vice President of Healthcare, was one of several AEC firm and health system executives interviewed by Building Design+Construction magazine for an article covering emerging trends like these in hospital facilities.
For example, as future-proofing and planning for long-term growth have become more important for health systems’ new facilities, Templin noted how this has created even more demand for large-scale projects and complex master plan initiatives. To optimize outcomes and success, earlier involvement and collaboration among all partners (owner, design, and construction) is imperative and delivery models like design-build are becoming more customary. The article also highlights how common prefab and modular design and construction approaches have become in the healthcare industry. Due to multiple factors, including additional schedule and cost certainty benefits, this trend will continue, with more prevalence, innovation, and sophistication on the horizon.
AEC and healthcare industry leaders also commented on technology’s increasingly significant role in the built environment, as well as design and construction processes. Consequently, technology now impacts virtually every phase and aspect of projects, and its impact will certainly continue growing as it becomes more pervasive and advanced.
