Three Best Practices For Successful Hospital Expansion Projects

Inpatient demand from an aging population and a desire to provide the right service line mix in customer-centric spaces are driving many health systems to expand and future-proof their hospitals. With space-constrained campuses and the increasing cost of land, growing vertically is often the only option.

An unwavering demand in inpatient care paired with limited space and resources poses a critical challenge for health systems working to keep pace. For many, growing vertically is often the only option.

Looking at big-picture impact and the distinctive elements that would be involved in such a project is necessary in being able to determine the best solution. JE Dunn Construction Vice President and Project Executive, Kyle Drake, details the key strategies used when evaluating a healthcare client’s needs, some of which include using unfinished “shell space” for future needs, understanding the impacts of vertical expansions, detailed planning before construction and robust communication and expectation-setting throughout the project lifecycle.

“Unlike greenfield construction projects where the first several months are typically spent preparing the site for construction, vertical expansion schedules are on the critical path almost immediately,” says JE Dunn Senior Healthcare Project Manager Nick Paradossi. “We aren’t just adding one or more stories, we’re also preparing the entire building to support the expansion.”

The complexity of adding levels to existing buildings and the need for thorough preparation and communication are especially important for actively used health facilities, further emphasizing the need for early planning, finding ways to minimizing disruptions, and a clear line of communication with stakeholders.

“Given the unique nature of vertical expansions, their degree of complexity and the significant level of construction involved as soon as they begin, detailed planning should commence well before construction to minimize disruptions and ensure success,” says Drake.
