Named after the first and only Kansas Citian to be named to the Supreme Court, the Charles E. Whittaker U.S. Courthouse located in Kansas City, Missouri will soon receive a facelift and restoration, the first since its construction in 1998. This, thanks to a $62.4 million contract awarded to Kansas City-based JE Dunn Construction, which neighbors the courthouse one block away to the southeast.
The contract was awarded through the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) as part of President Biden’s Investing in America Agenda. The agenda aligns with the current administration’s Buy Clean Initiative under which the federal government is prioritizing the purchase of asphalt, concrete, glass and steel that have lower levels of greenhouse gas emissions associated with their production, use and disposal.
“JE Dunn Construction is honored to be a part of this project and to continue our decades-long relationship with the GSA,” said Ryan Watzke, Vice President, JE Dunn Construction. “We share in GSA’s commitment to construction innovation and to providing federal employees and agencies with high-performing facilities, and we are thrilled to help them execute their mission.”
Standing ten stories tall, construction on the 595,000 square-foot courthouse is slated to start toward the end of February and create over 300 jobs over an approximate 27-month duration.
Included in the restoration process of the Charles E. Whittaker U.S. Courthouse are plans to install low-embodied carbon (LEC) materials that will increase efficiency and overall performance of the building. The $62.4 million investment is part of a larger $96 million project for a complete window replacement and related roof repairs.
