JE Dunn provided full preconstruction and construction management services for this 184,000 SF new Emergency Department and bed tower, in addition to 82,000 SF of renovation to the existing hospital in Tifton, Georgia. The project is a horizontal tower expansion including a new Emergency Department with 53 patient positions, a new Clinical Decision Unit with seven patient positions, a new discharge Lounge with four patient positions, and a new Bed Tower addition with 36 Medical-Surgical Patient Rooms with 20 Intensive Care Patient Rooms and 16 Step-Down Patient Rooms.
Renovation in the existing hospital includes the Kitchen, Servery, Dining, Pharmacy, Registration, Lobby, Gift Shop, Chapel, Administration, Security, Bio-Medical, Materials Management, and Environmental Services. Renovation in the Medical Office Building includes Neuro-diagnostics, Health Information Systems, and the Central Business Office. Associated site work includes renovating existing drives, additional parking, detention ponds, and a new helipad. The tower’s second floor has new HVAC support for the building, kitchen, and surgery renovation areas. Careful coordination and planning efforts were required to ensure the new systems were operational on time to support the renovation areas and coordinate routes through the existing corridors without impacting ongoing operations.
The key to success here is the early investigative work before the start of construction. Our MEP coordinators led the investigation and developed a detailed plan for routes and shutdowns that minimized impacts and allowed the hospital to maintain operations. The project utilized full BIM coordination for the tower and renovation areas. Once the primary exterior skin demolition was completed, laser scanning was used to gather hundreds of data points to coordinate the existing structure with the new one. Early BIM coordination also allowed for extensive prefabrication opportunities.
