Latest Project: Tomahawk Elementary

JE Dunn built Shawnee Mission School District’s new Tomahawk Elementary School, replacing their previous building on the same site. This was the fifth and final project JE Dunn has completed for the district as a part of their 2021 Bond. The new 82,000-square-foot, two-story facility features flexible learning spaces, a centralized common area, and a dedicated Makers Lab for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) education. Designed to foster collaboration, the school includes multiple shared spaces for students and staff. A uniquely positioned playground sits at the heart of the building, visible from various vantage points and enclosed by the semi-circular layout.

Fun Facts of the New Tomahawk Elementary School:

  • Nature-Inspired Elevator Shaft: The school’s elevator shaft was creatively designed to resemble a tree, with colorful leaves extending throughout the building.
  • Interactive Touch Wall: A playful, tactile wall in the kindergarten hallway invites students to engage with various visual and sensory components.
  • Sensory Corridors: Both the first and second floors feature sensory corridors are equipped with LiteZilla walls, these are similar to a Lite Brite but on a larger scale, creating immersive experiences through light and interaction.
  • Indoor-Outdoor Stage Design: The stage in the commons aligns with an outdoor stage, provides a unique and flexible space that can be used for learning or presentations both inside and outside the building.
  • Behind-the-Scenes Video Updates: The project team created quarterly video updates for the Superintendent and District, offering a fun and informative look at the construction site’s progress. These updates kept the District engaged and excited. See the final video update below.
