Recognized by Engineering News-Record Mountain States as the 2021 Health Care Best Project Winner, this tower addition project provides Centennial Medical Center with three new stories of horizontal expansion totaling 90,000 SF. The addition includes new operating rooms, a post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), shell space, additional patient and ICU rooms, plus expanded space for the emergency department. The project team was able to accommodate the client’s request to add an additional floor of shell space after steel erection had already begun, while still maintaining the original schedule without compromising quality or safety. In fact, zero safety recordables were logged on this project. Placing insulation outside the weather barrier on the exterior skin, as opposed to the inside of the walls, also increased the building’s overall energy efficiency.
Additionally, this project served as a national lean construction pilot project for the owner, HCA, by leveraging a design-assist delivery model and the entire suite of Last Planner System tools to optimize collaboration, value, and efficiency. The project team was able to successfully navigate the uncertainty in the early months of the pandemic to continue construction, while also prioritizing health and safety for patients, hospital staff, and the project team.
