Originally built in 1988 and spanning 60 acres in southwest Austin, James Bowie High School serves over 2,900 students, making it the largest comprehensive high school in the Austin Independent School District. The school’s extensive academic and extracurricular offerings necessitated a modernization effort to transform it into a state-of-the-art campus. JE Dunn was entrusted with this critical renovation, which included facility upgrades and new additions to enhance student experiences.
Key components of the modernization included the construction of a new multi-level parking garage topped with tennis courts, new athletics and fine arts facilities, career and technical education spaces, and improvements to existing parking areas to accommodate the school’s band practices. The project was implemented in four phases, with each phase completed by the end of each summer so new facilities were operational at the start of each school year, minimizing disruption to students, faculty, and staff.
