The JE Dunn team completed a two-phased, occupied renovation in the Student Services Center. The renovation consisted of updating and reconfiguring student support functions and offices, as well as modifying classroom spaces to reflect current instructional techniques, improve student interaction, and upgrade technology. The renovation provided students with flexible new spaces to study and socialize, with breakout spaces that can be used individually, for collaboration, or in larger groups. Campus wide resources are now centrally located around the new commons, providing visibility and ease of access to services such as the tutoring center and computer lab.
Remodeling on an active, open campus is always a challenge. During Phase 2, the project team used a phased construction approach, along with temporary walls and signage, to reroute occupants through the building. Occupancy was lessened to 20% in Phase 2 due to COVID-19, but the required COVID-19 protocols created additional constraints. Despite this, Phases 1 and 2 were both delivered under budget and on time, enabling the Owner to use the savings for other priorities.
