Hillyard, Inc. is a 100+-year-old chemical company. JE Dunn served as design-builder for a new, 141,000 SF, 20-dock position distribution center adjacent to Hillyard’s headquarters in downtown St. Joseph, MO.
Site work was extensive, including nearly two months of remediation of unforeseen conditions following demolition of the existing structure on the site. The slab on grade is 10 inches thick, as Hillyard’s average pallet weighs 2,800 pounds. Racking requirements and poor soils also drove this level of slab thickness.
The facility is comprised of 78 concrete tilt panels with two-inch insulated metal panels. 14,000 SF of the warehouse space is for class IC high flammability storage and includes a one-hour firewall, fire-rated doors, and spill containment barriers.
The space was designed with employee experience in mind, with the entire building being heated and air conditioned, along with clerestory windows to bring in natural light.
