JE Dunn Construction announced that Tom Whittaker, Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer, will retire in January 2027 after more than three decades of service to the company. Colby Cox has returned to JE Dunn and will succeed Whittaker as Chief Legal Officer, effective Jan. 1, 2027.
Since joining the company in 1994, Whittaker has played a pivotal role in JE Dunn’s evolution, helping to navigate the organization through decades of expansion while building and leading the legal, risk management, compliance, and government affairs functions. Known for his steady leadership and thoughtful counsel, Whittaker has served as a trusted advisor to generations of company leaders while helping shape the culture and values that define JE Dunn today.
Just as meaningful as his contributions inside the company are the relationships he has built across the architecture, engineering, and construction industry. His commitment to service, collaboration, and doing what is right has earned the respect of colleagues, partners, and community leaders alike.
“Tom’s legacy extends far beyond the legal function,” said Gordon Lansford, President and CEO. “He has helped shape our company, mentor countless leaders, and strengthen the relationships that have made JE Dunn what it is today. We are grateful for his dedication, friendship, and leadership, and we look forward to celebrating everything he has contributed to our company over the past 32 years.”
Cox — who previously worked for JE Dunn from 2006-2017 — has built an impressive track record leading legal, risk management, and compliance organizations for major construction companies, most recently serving as Chief Legal Officer for Gray. He brings a rare combination of industry expertise, strategic leadership, and a deep understanding of JE Dunn’s culture and guiding principles to the role. His experience leading complex legal, risk, compliance, governance, and growth initiatives position him to help the company navigate opportunities and challenges in an increasingly complex business environment.
“What makes this transition especially exciting is that Colby understands who we are,” Lansford said. “He knows our people, our values, and our industry. At the same time, he brings fresh perspectives and experiences that will help us continue to evolve and grow. We are thrilled to welcome him back to JE Dunn and confident in the future of our legal organization under his leadership.”
