Austin Convention Center Redevelopment

Project Highlights

The Vision: Unconventional ATX

The redevelopment of the Austin Convention Center (ACC) will transform downtown Austin. By nearly doubling the rentable space to 124,000 square feet, this project shifts from a sprawling horizontal footprint to a sophisticated vertical design. This modernization will make sure that Austin remains a premier global destination while maximizing the efficiency of the city’s urban core and reopening 2nd and 3rd Streets to pedestrians and vehicles. This project will effectively reconnect the east and west sides of Austin.

Pushing the Envelope: Sustainability & Innovation

The Austin Convention Center is pushing the envelope on numerous fronts and is on track to be the first zero-carbon certified convention center in the world through the International Living Futures Institute (ILFI).

  • An all-electric kitchen powered entirely by green energy resources using chilled water from Austin Energy.
  • Low-carbon concrete mixes, setting a new standard for the Austin market.
  • The strategic use of mass timber to reduce carbon footprint and bring carbon storage to the convention center.
  • Carpets, metals, and concrete and the prominent reuse of key materials from the existing convention.

The Power of Partnership: JE Dunn + Turner

This project represents a “best of both worlds” Joint Venture. We combine JE Dunn’s deep Austin roots and local supply chain expertise with Turner’s national portfolio of large-scale assembly projects. Together, we provide the City of Austin with an indispensable partner capable of navigating the complexities of a $1.6B redevelopment.

Progress in Motion: Construction Milestones

We are currently moving at pace to meet the City’s 2029 reopening goal. Key activity includes:

  • Demolition Phase: Systematic dismantling of the existing structure to clear the way for the vertical expansion.
  • D-Wall (Diaphragm Wall) Operations: Implementation of advanced deep-foundation techniques to secure the site and support the massive vertical load of the new facility.
  • Site Mobilization: Establishing a high-efficiency logistics plan to minimize disruption to the downtown Austin core.
