Central Utilities Plant

Project Highlights

JE Dunn completed a central plant facility utilizing two 7.2MW gas turbine electric generators with two heat recovery steam generators, four 2,500 ton chillers and built up cooling towers. Construction also included new tunnel systems to expand the campus steam and chilled water distribution.

Coordination with equipment vendors and manufacturers was a vital part of the success of the project. The plant features new combined heat and power (CHP) equipment as well as new chillers. Equipment costs for this project were roughly $30 million, half of the total projects costs. With lead time for gas turbines and heat recovery steam generators pushing 24 months, JE Dunn worked closely with the Engineers and Manufacturers to allow for pre-purchasing of the equipment to meet the project schedule.

JE Dunn relied on BIM coordination to ensure these large pieces of equipment and large piping component could all fit within the allowed spaces in the plant. Each manufacturer and subcontractor modeled their scope of work and weekly meetings were held to allow for seamless installation once the pieces arrived. JE Dunn utilized the ‘just in time’ delivery method to ensure these large pieces of equipment would be transported directly to the job site at exactly the right time.
