In the spring of 2019, the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) moved its sports broadcasting from Raycom to the new ACC Network, part of ESPN. To prepare the Georgia Institute of Technology for this move, JE Dunn renovated a 6,698-square-footfacility building, turning it into a full-fledged broadcast studio. Transmitting a network of this caliber requires high-quality efficiency, precision, and collaboration between all partners. When preparing for the design and construction of the Georgia Institute of Technology ACC Network Center, Georgia Tech selected JE Dunn and its Smart Building Solutions (SBS) team to implement a fully integrated operations system that would improve efficiency, reduce energy costs, and significantly enhance network operations.

Working with technology operations throughout the construction process could potentially generate unexpected circumstances. The quick thinking of the SBS team turned potential problems into time-saving solutions for the owner. after a previous AV consultant in charge of installing the cabling and connector panels unexpectedly left the project, JE Dunn stepped in to source and oversee installation of the made-to-order cabling.

To further improve efficiency for the network—and the school’s entire campus— the SBS group added the OSP fiber backbone connecting this Ops Center with each of the sporting venues throughout the campus. After constructing a new telecommunications room in each of the sporting venues, they extended the fiber to the camera locations throughout the venues, terminating that cable in a custom-made connection panel.

Now fully equipped with UPS, fire alarm, structured cabling, broadcast cabling, access control, and a dimming system, the ACC Network Operations Center celebrated its grand opening in August 2019. Through careful planning and coordination between design and construction operations partners, the project was completed ahead of schedule and not only provided the Georgia Institute Technology athletics department with their complete wish list items, but it also delivered a state-of-the-art studio customized to their unique needs.
