William H. Dunn Sr.

Former CEO & Founder Ernie Dunn's son
1923 – 2026

Treat everyone, your clients, your employees, the designers you work for, treat them just exactly the way you want to be treated yourself and you will be amazed at good things happening.

William H. Dunn Sr., whose leadership of JE Dunn Construction spanned more than seven decades and whose legacy is defined by extraordinary generosity, passed away on May 31 at the age of 102.

It’s impossible to fully capture the profound impact that Bill — affectionately known to most of us as Mr. Dunn — has had on JE Dunn and Kansas City throughout his remarkable 73-year career and 102 years of life. His legacy is one of unyielding integrity, heartfelt service, and a dedication to building not only structures but also relationships and communities. Mr. Dunn’s life, work, and character have shaped a company and a city that stand as living testaments to his influence.

Born into the construction business, Mr. Dunn started working alongside his father in the early 1940s, laboring during summers as a young man. But even then, the foundation of his remarkable journey was already being laid—not through his hands but through his heart. Bill’s philosophy was simple: build from the heart. Money and material things never motivated him; instead, it was the commitment to doing what he said he would do, always giving 110%, and doing the right thing, even when no one was watching. This is what earned him the trust of clients, the loyalty of employees, and the respect of all who crossed his path.

His philosophy was simple yet profound: “It’s important to leave the world in better shape than when you came into it.” This wasn’t just something he said — it was something he lived every day. His impact extends far beyond the buildings he helped construct. Mr. Dunn was a true believer in the power of giving back. His passion for helping those in need and his unwavering generosity have positively impacted countless lives across Kansas City and beyond. He once said, “It’s a lot more fun giving money away than making money,” and it’s clear he meant it. His philanthropic legacy is immeasurable — he has served on more than 100 nonprofit boards and supported initiatives that have bettered communities, uplifted individuals, and provided opportunity to those who needed it most.

Mr. Dunn’s dedication to service and generosity has earned him countless awards, including Kansas Citian of the Year and Philanthropist of the Year. However, the real reward for him was always the impact he could make on others. Whether it was through his volunteer work, his financial support, or his time spent advising those in need, Mr. Dunn always placed people first.

The family business grew to become one of the nation’s leading construction firms under his leadership, but it was never just about the bottom line for him. He believed that “the only thing JE Dunn builds better than buildings are relationships.” The trust he built with clients, employees, and community members is what truly set JE Dunn apart. It’s a trust that endures today, in part because of Bill’s steadfast commitment to integrity, honesty, and always doing the right thing.

Outside the office, Mr. Dunn’s love for his family was as strong as his commitment to the company. He met his beloved Jean at a holiday party, and together they raised six children. Even with a schedule that often demanded his attention, he always found time for his family — whether coaching little league teams, playing catch in the yard, or offering advice at the dinner table. His devotion to his family has left a lasting impression on his children and on all of us at JE Dunn, where family remains a core value.

Mr. Dunn was a true leader, not just in the construction industry, but in life. He showed us what it means to lead with heart, to give without expectation, and to always prioritize people over profit. As we reflect on his incredible legacy, we know that the values he instilled in JE Dunn will continue to guide us for generations to come.

To say Mr. Dunn was a man of heart would be an understatement. His heart was vast, and it touched everyone he encountered. The world is better for his having lived in it. His legacy will endure for generations to come in the buildings we build, the relationships we nurture, and the communities we serve.
