The Salem Police Department had outgrown their space inside City Hall where they had been located for nearly 50 years. JE Dunn, along with DLR Group and local architecture firm CB Two, worked with the City of Salem and Police Department to create a new facility to consolidate units and departments that were split between City Hall and off-site leased spaces. The new police station includes evidence storage, crime lab, training spaces as well as the City of Salem Emergency Operations Center. The 104,000 square foot building also includes a community meeting room, public lobby area, and outdoor plaza—balancing an inviting, civic building while maintaining secure facilities for police operations. The adjacent 77,000 square foot parking garage includes secure parking for 250 vehicles.
Community impact was an important focus for this project, from the design of the facility to the hiring of local design and construction firms. Dozens of local companies and workers who live in Salem and the immediate area participated in building the police station.
