JE Dunn worked in collaboration with the architect to design and construct this two-story, all-encompassing, multi-disciplinary surgery center and medical office building. The main goal was to create a “one-stop-shop” by combining a nine-bed specialty hospital, ambulatory surgery center, physician suites, physical therapy, pain management, radiology, sterile processing, fixed and extremities MRI and retail durable goods, and 14 doctors into one building. The team gave special attention during preconstruction to budget and design a facility that was efficient and cost effective. To meet the design goals, the facility needed to maintain the identity of each practice and service, while linking each component and creating an intimate medical environment. The exterior challenges involved creating permanence, elegance and stature, while maintaining a contemporary aesthetic and meeting the desires of city officials.
To overcome this challenge and reflect the relationship between the building and the profession of orthopaedics, the architect developed the “Spine” concept. The spine begins with the central, two-story lobby where patients and visitors are greeted and oriented to the entire facility upon arrival. Public corridors function as circular spines leading patients and visitors to the many individual disciplines of the building. Each discipline then has its own reception area, waiting area, patient rooms and suites, creating its own identity within the facility.
