JE Dunn’s work on the Kansas City Power & Light District consisted of constructing seven, retail core and shell buildings totaling 286,000 SF and two, below-grade parking garages totaling 386,000 SF (1,147 parking spaces) and associated site work around five city blocks. The structure of the retail buildings consisted of structural steel, precast and concrete framing, and decks. The exterior of the retail buildings was made up of a variety of materials; brick, block, stucco, architectural metal panels, aluminum curtain walls, and storefronts. Roof material consisted of EPDM membrane roofing with ballast and standing seam metal roof. Site work included custom-designed aluminum tree cribs and grates, structural soil and concrete brick pavers, as well as the planting and trees surrounding five city blocks. JE Dunn began construction on the first below-grade parking in October 2005 and finished the last retail building on May 9, 2008. The larger 5-level 326,611 SF, 1,016-car below grade parking garage with 1,016 parking spaces was cast in place structure. The single level, 60,090 SF, 131-car below grade cast in place parking structure was built for President Hotel. The garage has oversized piers and grade beams for potential 16-story expansion (7-level parking, 9-level office space). It included drilled piers, spread footings, slab on grade and columns. The lid to the garage is also cast in place concrete and has 11 different elevation changes/steps on the lid to match retail spaces above. JE Dunn self-performed work including precast, concrete, and masonry.
