St. David’s Medical Center ICU Expansion is a 29,000-square-foot, single story vertical expansion, including interior build out of 12 ICU patient rooms with future shell space for an additional 12 ICU patient rooms in the future. Two bridges, one designated for staff and the other for the public, connect the new expansion to the existing fifth floor of the adjacent bed tower. Additional work included HVAC and fire alarm upgrades, fireproofing, mechanical up grades to the Central Utility Plant (CUP), elevator tower expansion, and tie-in work with the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) wing.
The project was completed in a fully operational hospital and was especially sensitive due to construction above St. David's NICU. Daily communication with St. David's staff was required to ensure progress on the project didn't interfere with the health and healing of babies in the NICU. The project team restricted construction noise to certain days and times, checked quality of air and sound disturbances daily, and followed JE Dunn's We Care Program, which addresses the intricacies of the highly specialized nature of healthcare construction. This project required a Lean project delivery. JE Dunn used Pull Planning and Last Planner System to stay on schedule and ensure accurate coordination with trade partners during this 14-month project.
