Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Miscellaneous Projects

JE Dunn has completed multiple projects at the Atlanta International Airport listed below.

West Crossover Public Space Improvements

Architect: Hartsfield-Jackson Design Collaborative

The West Crossover Modernization project provided upgrades to the high-traffic and high-visibility area atop the arrivals escalator at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The project is situated between the north and south baggage claims and included new terrazzo tile, restroom renovations and the relocation and modernization of the information desk.

This project involved an extremely high degree of coordination with multiple parties, including Landside Operations, DOA project management staff, the airport fire department, AATC, concessions tenants and other general contractors.

Dunn Aviation Group began work each night while passengers were still in the terminal, re-routing passengers to facilitate the work. Each night, work hours were adjusted based on passenger traffic flow; flexibility was the key to this project, as passenger safety and convenience always remained priority number one.

Concourse T HVAC Upgrades

Architect: Heery International | Project Size: 492,186 SF | Completion Date: April 2015

The Concourse T HVAC Upgrades project encompassed 492,186 square feet at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. All HVAC systems and ceilings in Concourse T were completely replaced and tied into the existing building automation system. Much of this work occurred in compressed areas, including above-ceiling work in passenger and active office areas, where each area was returned to its original condition prior to the next morning’s work day. The detailed work performed on Concourse T also required close coordination with numerous stakeholders within the airport during non-peak hours to ensure zero passenger and airline personnel disturbance. During the Concourse T project, 33 tenants were affected by the ongoing work, all of which were kept apprised of project activities.

The Concourse T HVAC upgrades project included four crane lifts that required coordination with Delta’s tower to ensure airplanes were not parked overnight at gates that provided material off-load areas. In addition to the crane lifts for equipment and material placement, the project included infrastructure for support of items such as new ceilings, structural support and wall opening modifications.

Most work occurred directly above passenger boarding areas and office spaces. Several precautions were taken to safeguard passengers. These measures included securing all light fixtures, diffusers, smoke detectors and ceiling fixtures from the structure and tagging them for structural soundness with highly visible red tags, reinforcing the safety in each area where the ceiling and grid was removed. As an additional precautionary measure, scaffolding and netting was installed in high-traffic areas, which made for a compressed work area, but also ensured passenger safety by ensuring no debris fell from the overhead work area. The aforementioned practices were executed flawlessly on numerous occasions throughout Concourse T.

Vertical Transportation Replacement Logistics and Coordination

Completion Date: February 2016

The Vertical Transportation Replacement Logistics and Coordination project was a three-year program that included logistical and hoisting support for KONE as they upgraded moving sidewalks and elevators at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The entirety of JE Dunn’s scope for this project was ensuring interior maintenance of traffic and secure overhead and interior readiness after each night’s work completed. As part of the project, JE Dunn supported KONE by building temporary partitions around work areas, as well as temporary storage areas to house components and debris staging. JE Dunn removed all debris from the location of the work, in addition to providing hoisting support for all KONE's equipment, including removing the access hatch, coordinating nightly set-up and break-down of a crane. JE Dunn also provided directional signage to ensure minimal passenger confusion during construction.

Employee Security Screening

Architect: Creative Eye Architects | Completion Date: 06/30/2015 | Project Size: 4,500 SF

This project provided 4,500 SF in airport security screening upgrades for employees entering secured areas at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. All work was performed without any disturbance to ongoing operations. JE Dunn added a checkpoint and installed security screening equipment, access control and cameras in both the domestic and international terminals.
