Charles R. Drew Charter School Senior Academy is a 205,375-square-foot, three-story senior high school and middle school. As a charter, the school serves as an option to students in the Atlanta Public Schools system. The school will eventually serve more than 1,000 students and is located adjacent to Drew's existing campus. The facility includes several flexible learning suites, seven project learning labs, seven science labs, two specialty engineering and design labs, as well as integrated arts studios. A 500-seat fine arts theater and a full-size athletic field are also included for school and community use.
The unique structure features sloping roofs and large steel columns of various sizes complemented by three-story glass walls that allow natural light. BIM was utilized on all MEP and structural systems during preconstruction. JE Dunn recognized that split-system mechanical systems would work better than the designed concrete/boiler system resulting in significant savings for the owner. An additional $2 million in value engineering was also saved during pre-construction. The project is pursuing LEED Silver certification.
