From lack of sleep to extended hours and increased workload, fatigue is often an overlooked hazard in the construction industry – and a factor that affects a worker’s ability to perform safely on the job. Fatigue can reduce a worker’s response and reaction time, which greatly increases risk when working in high-hazard situations like climbing tower cranes or operating heavy machinery.

As with any other hazard, controls are required to minimize risks associated with fatigue. One way to mitigate this issue is by implementing a written management plan that emphasizes the dangers associated with working while fatigued. There are several options for avoiding fatigue hazards — from wearable technology, efficient scheduling, and most importantly: sleep. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 35% of Americans do not get the recommended seven hours of sleep at night. Not getting enough sleep can impact health and quality of life tremendously.
